How This Calculator Works

This calculator estimates your take-home pay for each paycheck. It starts with your gross pay, subtracts pre-tax 401(k), health and HSA contributions, then takes out federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%) and your state income tax. It spreads your estimated tax for the year evenly across your paychecks, so the withholding on a real pay stub can differ a little.

Money that goes into a Traditional 401(k), a Health Savings Account (HSA) or employer medical and dental premiums comes out before federal and state income tax is figured. That lowers your tax bill, though your take-home pay still drops by the amount you set aside.
