This calculator works out the minimum you must withdraw each year from a pre-tax retirement account: a Traditional IRA, SEP IRA, SIMPLE IRA, or a Traditional 401(k) or 403(b). It divides your balance by a factor from the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table (Publication 590-B, Table III). That table does not cover inherited accounts or a spouse who is more than 10 years younger, which use different tables. If you have not reached RMD age yet, the calculator grows your balance to that age at your expected return and shows your first RMD then.
Under the SECURE 2.0 Act, you start taking RMDs at 73 if you were born between 1951 and 1959. If you were born in 1960 or later, the starting age is 75, beginning in 2033. Roth IRAs and Roth 401(k)s have no RMDs while the original owner is alive.
