How This Calculator Works

This calculator estimates what a certificate of deposit (CD) pays at maturity. It assumes interest compounds monthly at a rate that matches the stated APY: monthly rate = (1 + APY)^(1/12) − 1. A 12-month CD at 4.75% APY therefore earns 4.75% over the year.

It also estimates an early withdrawal penalty, so you can weigh locking in a CD rate against keeping your cash available in a high-yield savings account. Many banks charge about 90 days of interest on terms of 12 months or less and 180 days on longer terms. Check your own CD's terms and enter the number of days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CD ladder?

A CD ladder splits your money across CDs with different maturities, for example 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 years. Each year one CD matures, and you either use the cash or roll it into a new 5-year CD at the going long-term rate. That way part of your money is available every year without a penalty.

How is a CD early withdrawal penalty calculated?

Most banks charge a set number of days of interest, such as 90 days on terms up to 12 months and 180 days on longer ones, based on the stated rate. If you withdraw very early, the penalty can eat into your principal.
