How This Calculator Works

Federal estate tax only reaches very large estates. For 2026 the exemption is $15,000,000 per person, or $30,000,000 for a married couple that uses portability. You enter the total value of your estate (real estate, investment accounts, business interests and life insurance proceeds) and the calculator shows what is taxable above that line.

Debts, mortgages, final expenses and gifts to charity come off first. Whatever is left above the exemption is taxed at the top rate of 40%. This is a simple estimate: it leaves out state estate and inheritance taxes, the marital deduction and gifts made during your lifetime.
